RILEY HERB COMPANY
We sell a unique blend of herbs to be used as a feed supplement for llamas and alpacas to Stimulate Lactation.

Who should use Riley Herbs?:  We recommend using the lactation herb blend with your females that have had milk production problems in the past, older dams, first time mothers, or any female you want to have increased milk production.

About Us:  We have owned llamas since 1987.  Our farm, Riley Llamas, was very successful in breeding many halter champions and multiple National Champion llamas. (We have now retired from llama breeding and focus on selling herbs and microchips to the camelid community)   In our breeding experience, we’ve had over 300 births on our farm.  As breeders we were always looking for ways to improve the health of our llamas.  We researched the use of lactation stimulating herbs in 2002 and created our own blend and began using it as a feed supplement for our llamas.  We did a 5 yr comparative study within our llama herd and proved that our unique herb blend used with the 40 day treatment program we developed was successful at increasing the lactation in our females.  The study was published in the Summer 2005 issue of Alpacas Magazine.  We work with a wholesale herb seller to mix our blend and sell to us in bulk so that we can pass the savings on to our fellow breeders.

The Riley Herb Blend:  Our blend is unique from other lactation stimulation blends being sold.  It includes: dill, caraway, fennel, fenugreek seeds, and chopped basil leaves.  All of these have proven galactogogue (milk-stimulating) properties.  We eliminated the use of red raspberry leaves, which are found in other blends, because they have no milk-stimulating properties, and we were concerned about its ability to stimulate uterine muscle relaxation which could lead to prolonged birth times and decrease the ability of the female to push out the cria.  In addition, it does not mix well with the other herb and feed.  The herbal supplement has been shown to increase milk production in all females, so even a dam with great milk will produce even more milk.

Our Program:  We developed a 40 day program.  We believe that the female should have herbs for 2 weeks before the cria is due, so we suggest starting the supplement 4 weeks before the expected due date since females can deliver several weeks before or after their due dates.  And we suggest continuing the use of herbs for 2 weeks after the cria is delivered to assure the maximum benefit of the lactation stimulation.  So the female will receive 6 weeks of herbal supplementation.  You will begin to see your females “bag up” after about 2 weeks of using herbs.  We have even seen non-pregnant females begin to have milk production with the use of herbs.

  1. 2 ounces of herb mix (this can be measured by using a standard one/half cup cooking measure cup which holds 2 oz. of herbs when filled to the brim). You need one/half cooking cup per day per alpaca.
  2. 1 ½ times the normal daily ration during the last four weeks of pregnancy.
  3. ¼  lb. washed rolled oats
  4. ¼  lb. Cracked corn  **Note there is anecdotal evidence that cracked corn should not be given to alpacas**

Mix all of the ingredients well before feeding. We use a wooden spatula for mixing. Keep the unused herbs in a dry cool location.
Five pounds per alpaca should provide treatment for 40 days. We start 3-4 weeks before the expected due date and continue until all of the herbs are used.

**For llamas, just double the amount of herb mix given per day to 4 oz.  So 10 pounds per llama will provide treatment for 40 days.**  We encourage breeders to find the program that works best in their herd.

Best Price Available:  We work with a wholesale herb distributor to mix our unique blend, which allows us to offer our blend at the lowest price available.  We have the mix blended fresh and never store it for long periods of time.  We sell in bulk, not prepackaged amounts, so you can order exactly what you need and know that you are getting the best price available.  Our price is about HALF the price of other lactation stimulation herbal blends.   If using our 40 day program you will need to order 5 lbs/ alpaca or 10 lbs/ llama that you wish to supplement.  We sell the herb blend for $5.50/ lb plus the cost of shipping.  Orders of 100 lbs or more will be charged the discounted rate of $4.25/lb.

Order Now:  You can order via our online form or call us at 1-800-552-6216.  Your invoice will arrive by mail with the shipping costs added.   Orders of 10 lbs or less will ship priority mail flat rate for $10.  All other orders are shipped UPS and we charge you the exact cost of the shipping.  Most orders will arrive at your farm within 3-14 days after you order them.
